Songs: how to sing with textiles.

Learn how to work with many textures and colours, hand dyed fabrics from silk to velvet, glitz and lace, yarns and beading. Using free motion machining we will assemble small surface embellished quilts.

Hidden Layers: Reverse Applique

Reverse appliqué is an ancient tradition where layered fabrics are sewn together and the surface layers are cut away in patterns to reveal the lower layers of colour. I will show you how to use this method of sewing with the technique of free machining, repeat motifs and stand alone motifs to create a small quilt that is contemporary and unique.

The New Lace: Solvy yarn and textile constructions.

Scatter novelty yarns and fragments of fabric and connect them with a spider web of threads to make a very different shoulder wrap.

A Cluster of Quilts

Using the elements and principles of design we will make 4 to 6 small format art quilts that relate to each other. We will work intuitively using fabric collage to construct the quilts exploring a different aspect of design in each. You will take home not only six little quilts but a clearer understanding of why a design does and doesn’t work. It might sound like a challenge but it will be gentle and not too brain-smoking to see how simple concepts can give your quilt the wow factor.

The Take Away Dye Day

Friday November 10th OR Saturday November 11th 2006
9.30 to 3ish
at Quorrobolong

The idea of the workshop is to have fun and build a stash of hand dyed fat quarters. I am not going to do colour theory or dye recipes, everything will be supplied and all you do is splash around and make unrepeatable happy accidents. We will scrunch dye and fill containers in the Parfait Method and everyone can take their containers home and then wash them out.

Using thickened dye and more fat quarters (prepared with soda ash) we will experiment with painting and stamping.

There will also be more exotic fat quarters of fabrics like velvet, silk and sateens (varied prices) to play with.

Workshop fee: $75

This covers instructions, 16 fat quarters of white cotton, use of mixed dyes, soda ash and sealed containers. Plus two fat quarters of cotton treated with soda ash for painting.
